Three months ago, on a ski in the first fine snow of the season, just after Christmas, I tore my hamstring badly skiing down this ravine. (This photo looks up the ravine.) I came back to shoot it in the rain and try to get the fog floating cupped down in the ravine. Didn’t quite — but walked out fine this time. Last time, left on a snowmobile.
I write on science, nature, and culture for the New York Times, National Geographic Slate, Nature, and other publications; I've also written three books. More on all that is at daviddobbs.net. For blog posts tied closely tied to those interests, see my main working blog, NeuronCulture.
